British Government Begins Consultations to Enhance Youth Digital Protection and Impose Restrictions on Social Media and School Phones

The British government has unveiled new initiatives aimed at protecting young people and children from the effects of social media and ensuring a safer digital environment, according to a statement published on the official British government website. This step involves broad participation to strengthen youth digital protection policies.

British authorities will discuss setting a minimum age for creating accounts on social media platforms, drawing on the experiences of countries that have pioneered in this field. They will also explore effective mechanisms to control inappropriate content and combat excessive use of these platforms by adolescents and young people.

The government has tasked Ofsted (the Office for Standards in Education) with organizing inspections to verify compliance with the “smartphone-free schools” policy. Official data warned that more than half of pupils have ignored current restrictions imposed on phone use in schools.

According to reports by “The Guardian,” Prime Minister Keir Starmer is considering imposing a ban on the use of social media for children and adolescents under the age of 16, as part of a broad campaign for youth digital protection.

This British direction comes within a growing international trend to limit the influence of social media networks on younger generations; Australia has passed a similar ban for those under 16, which is expected to take effect in late 2025. Countries such as Denmark, France, Spain, and Turkey are also considering imposing strict age restrictions to protect youth digitally from the dominance of the virtual world.
