Record Thunderstorm Days Across Saudi Cities Revealed in Meteorology Report

A report from the National Center for Meteorology detailed the average annual number of thunderstorm days in Saudi cities from 1985 to 2025, based on long-term climate monitoring.

Abha topped the list with 59 thunderstorm days per year, followed by Ta’if with 45 days, and both Khamis Mushait and Al-Baha with 44 days each.

Other regions recorded the following averages: Jazan 33 days; Al-Qassim and Hail 19 days each; Bisha, Mecca, and Dammam 17 days each.

Madinah recorded 15 days, Riyadh 14 days, Najran 13 days, Rafha, Al-Ahsa, Arar, and Al-Jawf 11 days each.

Jeddah had 10 days, Wadi Al-Dawasir 9 days, Tabuk and Yanbu 8 days, Al-Qurayyat 7 days, and Sharurah 6 days. At the lower end, Turaif had 5 days and Al-Wajh 4 days annually.

The report aims to present the climatic characteristics of Saudi regions using documented observational data, as part of ongoing long-term climate monitoring efforts.
