The Comoros national team has exited the Africa Cup of Nations despite drawing with Mali in its final match, after its tally rose to two points, equal to that of Angola—the third-placed team in Group A—who still holds a chance for qualification.
Four of the best third-placed teams in the Africa Cup of Nations qualify for the Round of 16, joining the 12 teams that qualified by securing first and second place in the group stage.
Comoros occupied third place in Group A, but Angola, holding the same position in Group B, has a better goal difference (-1) compared to Comoros’ difference (-2).
Zambia suffered a heavy defeat to sit at the bottom of Group A, followed by Zimbabwe, the fourth-placed team in Group B, along with Comoros, the third-placed team in Group A. This comes despite three other teams having the potential to increase their tally to 3 points, yet they will fail to qualify due to head-to-head results.
Gabon, Botswana, and Equatorial Guinea have bid farewell to the tournament despite their recent victories, as they lost the chance to occupy third place in their groups due to head-to-head results with their competitors for the same position. Although these three teams currently have no points, their final matches will not benefit them.
