Protests in Albania Sparked by Corruption Allegations and Opposition Lawmakers Clash with Parliament Police
A wave of protests has erupted in Albania following weeks of escalating tensions over widespread corruption allegations against Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku and other government officials.
The current events stem from a significant deterioration in the political situation, as Balluku faced sharp criticism in the Albanian parliament last month. She dismissed the allegations during defensive responses in parliamentary sessions, describing them as “mudslinging, insinuations, half-truths, and lies.”
In a serious escalation, violent clashes broke out between Albanian opposition lawmakers and parliament security personnel on Thursday, as reported by Reuters. According to correspondents, several opposition leaders launched an attack on police forces stationed inside the assembly, further intensifying the political crisis.
