The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has reached an agreement with an Israeli family who survived the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, after a media team belonging to the corporation entered their heavily damaged home without permission.
A BBC News team, which included International Editor Jeremy Bowen, entered the home of the Israeli family on the Gaza border and documented what they saw inside the house in the days following the deadly attacks. The team documented personal photos of the family’s children at a time when their friends were unaware of their fate, according to a report by a Jewish news organization.
A BBC spokesperson said that while the corporation does not comment on specific legal issues, it is pleased to have reached an agreement in this case.
Tzilla Horinstein said that attackers threw a grenade at her husband, Simon, during a Hamas attack on the town of Netiv HaAsara on the morning of October 7. The wife and two young children survived only because the house door jammed and held when the attackers tried to blow it up with explosives, she added, according to the Jewish organization that first published the story.
She said: “It wasn’t just that the terrorists entered our home and tried to assassinate us, but the BBC team entered again, this time with a camera as a weapon of war, without permission or consent.”
“It was another intrusion into our lives. We felt that everything still under our control had been taken from us.”
The Jewish organization reported that the broadcaster provided financial compensation of £28,000 to the family.
The war in Gaza broke out following an attack launched by Hamas against southern Israel on October 7, 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were captured. According to the Hamas-affiliated Ministry of Health, the death toll from Israeli attacks in Gaza has reached more than 71,260 people since that date.
