Breaking: Abu Dhabi government remotely shuts down two solar power plants in Yemen.

2 Min Read

In a surprising move that deepens doubts about funding policies and strategic projects, a company affiliated with the Emirate of Abu Dhabi has shut down two vital solar power plants in Yemen.

In a new scandal coinciding with previous files involving secret prisons and allegations of looting the operational budgets of hospitals and police patrols and their equipment in Shabwa Governorate, the Abu Dhabi government halted the operation of two solar power plants التابعة to Global South Utilities (GSU), located in the interim capital Aden and Shabwa Governorate, remotely.

The Yemeni Ministry of Electricity and Energy expressed, in an official statement, its “deep regret over the UAE company operating the solar power plants in both the interim capital Aden and Shabwa Governorate switching off the two plants remotely in a sudden manner, without any prior arrangements or official coordination with the ministry or the relevant local authorities in the concerned areas.”

The ministry added that the shutdown was carried out “without providing clear technical justifications or prior operational notices,” noting that “this caused disruption to the power generation system and directly affected the stability of electricity service, especially given the reliance on solar energy to reduce loads during daylight hours.”

The ministry confirmed that it “did not receive any official correspondence from the operating company explaining the reasons for the shutdown or its duration, whether with regard to the Aden plant or the Shabwa plant.” It explained that this action “constitutes a breach of the operational responsibilities and the required coordination in managing strategic projects that affect the lives of citizens in more than one governorate.”

The Yemeni ministry held the UAE operating company responsible for this action and its consequences “in its capacity as the operator,” stressing its call for “the swift clarification of the reasons, the immediate resumption of operation of the two plants, and adherence to the required commitments…”
