Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes: Criticism Meets Patience and Passion

“It upsets me more than it hurts; it makes me cry,” stated Manchester United’s Portuguese midfielder, Bruno Fernandes. “I am a player who cannot be criticized for effort; I am always available and always give my absolute best.”

Fernandes added in a recent interview: “I could have left during this transition period and earned much more financially. I had the chance to win many trophies this season, but I decided not to leave—not just for family reasons, but because I truly love this club.”

Fernandes moved to Manchester United in January 2020 for £47 million from Sporting CP. Since then, he has made 307 appearances, scoring 103 goals and providing 93 assists. This season, he has recorded 5 goals and 7 assists in the Premier League, including a stunning free-kick and an assist in the 4-4 draw against Bournemouth this past Monday.

Last June, Fernandes confirmed that one reason he declined a move to the Saudi club Al-Hilal was his desire to continue “playing at the highest level,” noting that United manager Ruben Amorim was a key factor in his decision to stay at Old Trafford.

However, Fernandes told Canal 11: “The club wanted me to leave, and I informed the management of this. I believe they didn’t have the courage to make that decision because the manager wanted me to stay. But if I had announced that I wanted to leave, even if the manager wanted me to stay, the club would have let me go.”

Sources told BBC Sport that Manchester United is not seeking to sell Fernandes or let him leave, and that he remains central to the club’s long-term plans.
