Governor of the Central Bank of Syria Reveals Details of the New Currency Exchange

The Governor of the Central Bank of Syria, Abdul Qader Badr al-Din al-Husrieh, clarified that the published decree granted the Central Bank the necessary powers to determine the deadlines and centers for currency exchange, ensuring proper implementation and smooth procedures.

In a statement published by the Syrian Central Bank via the “Telegram” app, al-Husrieh stated that January 1, 2026, will be the date for the commencement of the exchange process with the new currency.

The Governor intended for the exchange process to be smooth and organized, emphasizing that the implementation mechanism will be announced with full clarity and transparency in a dedicated press conference to enhance trust and establish partnership with citizens.

Al-Husrieh affirmed that the new currency represents a symbol of Syria’s financial sovereignty after the liberation and the title of a new phase built by everyone’s cooperation and the management of the Central Bank of Syria, noting that it is “a national achievement added to what has been accomplished after the liberation, and a steadfast step toward stability and economic advancement.”

According to sources, the Syrian government had agreed last August with the Russian “Goznak” institution, specialized in printing money, to produce new banknotes and launch them on the first anniversary of the ousting of Assad.

The plan involves deleting two zeros from the currency in an attempt to restore confidence in the pound, which has severely depreciated. For the first time, the new currency will not include images of any individual, but rather Syrian national landmarks.

The Syrian pound has collapsed since the outbreak of the crisis in 2011, with the exchange rate now reaching approximately 11.5 thousand pounds to the dollar, compared to 50 pounds before the war. The devaluation of the currency has made daily transactions and financial transfers increasingly difficult.
