Dr. Abdulrahman Bukhari, a consultant specializing in diabetes, revealed that morning stress and anger can be potential causes of elevated blood sugar levels even without eating, warning of the impact of daily pressures on the body’s hormones and insulin resistance.
In response to a question from a diabetes patient who adheres to medical instructions and noticed—via a continuous glucose monitor—an increase in readings from waking up until 10–11 a.m. despite skipping breakfast, Bukhari explained that there are several possible causes of morning hyperglycemia, but in this case the cause was linked to psychological factors and daily stress.
In a post published on his account on the “X” platform, he said that workplace issues and traffic congestion were among the main sources of morning stress and anger for the patient, leading to elevated stress hormones, foremost among them cortisol, which in turn contributes to raising blood sugar levels and increasing insulin resistance.
He stressed the importance of early screening for diabetes complications immediately upon diagnosing type 2 diabetes, emphasizing the need to examine for retinopathy, peripheral neuropathy, and diabetic foot. He explained that most cases of type 2 diabetes are discovered years after the onset of the disease without the patient’s knowledge, due to the absence of symptoms and its gradual progression. In contrast, type 1 diabetes symptoms usually appear shortly before diagnosis, contributing to relatively earlier detection.
Regarding dates, Bukhari corrected a common misconception, affirming that dates are not prohibited for diabetes patients, but moderation is essential. He said that consuming 3 to 5 dates per day is appropriate, provided they are treated as a standalone snack without accompanying carbohydrates.
He explained that the nutritional content of dates varies by type and includes:
- 44–88% carbohydrates (including sugars, with higher percentages in sweeter varieties, excluding high-sugar date syrup),
- 6–12% fiber,
- 2–6% protein,
- 0.2–0.5% minerals, salts, vitamins, and unsaturated fats.
