A dialogue seminar titled “Features of Identity in Contemporary Saudi Architecture,” held during the activities of the Jeddah Book Fair 2025, discussed the concept of identity in contemporary Saudi architecture, the role of modern technologies in reshaping local architecture without compromising identity, and the impact of major national projects in building new urban features, in addition to sustainability and quality of life as an inherent part of modern Saudi architectural identity.
The seminar touched upon how to root local urban values derived from the Saudi environment and culture, while aligning them with the requirements of modernity, technology, and sustainability, in harmony with the principles emphasized by the King Salman Urban Charter, foremost of which are authenticity and continuity, livability and the human dimension, and sustainability and innovation.
The seminar, in which Engineer Fahd Al-Luwaihan participated, was moderated as part of the cultural program accompanying the fair organized by the Literature, Publishing and Translation Commission. It examined the role of the architect and urban planner in translating the King Salman Charter for Architecture and Urbanism into design practices that contribute to formulating a contemporary urban scene reflecting the Kingdom’s identity and keeping pace with future aspirations.
At the conclusion of the session, Al-Luwaihan stressed that the King Salman Charter for Architecture and Urbanism constitutes an important reference framework for guiding contemporary Saudi architecture and enhances its ability to combine authenticity and modernity, and heritage and innovation, emphasizing that architecture today has become an integrated system that translates the nation’s identity and contributes to building sustainable human cities for future generations.
