EU Imposes New Sanctions Targeting Russia’s “Shadow Fleet”
The European Union issued a new decision today as part of a tightened sanctions package against Russia, specifically targeting vessels known as the “shadow fleet.” It was announced that 40 additional vessels will be affected by the decision, along with specified associated support measures.
The “shadow fleet” is considered one of Russia’s most prominent sources of income, representing significant economic support. Combatting this fleet to inflict tangible damage on the Russian economy was a primary focus of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting held in Brussels on November 20.
For her part, Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the European Union, revealed that ongoing discussions are taking place among member states regarding the possibility of seizing oil tankers that Brussels believes are linked to the Russian “shadow fleet.”
