Large Fire in South Seoul Shanty Town Prompts Evacuation of Hundreds

A large-scale fire broke out at dawn on Friday in a densely populated residential neighborhood featuring informal housing, located on a hillside in the upscale Gangnam district of the South Korean capital, Seoul.

The massive blaze forced hundreds of residents in the area to seek safe shelter and flee their homes.

In the initial report, official sources stated that no casualties or fatalities have been reported so far as a result of the incident. However, sources from fire and civil defense officials said that rescue crews successfully evacuated a total of 258 trapped residents.

Meanwhile, the same sources responsible for the firefighting efforts indicated that they were able to fully extinguish the flames today, Friday, and prevent them from spreading to other areas.
