Medical Procedure to Treat Persistent Respiratory Spasms for Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro
The former Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, aged 70, underwent a medical protocol to treat persistent hiccups (respiratory spasms) that have plagued him for over 9 months.
One of his doctors said that Saturday’s treatment “went well,” while Dr. Claudio Pirolini noted that the procedure, which he insisted was “not a surgery,” lasted for “approximately one hour.”
The former far-right president is currently serving a sentence of up to 27 years for orchestrating a coup after losing the 2022 Brazilian presidential election to his leftist rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
This procedure comes after Bolsonaro successfully underwent double surgery earlier this week, after being granted permission for hospital detention.
Before the surgery, Bolsonaro also supported his son, Flávio, to run in the 2026 Brazilian presidential election against Lula. A statement was read—step by step—by the younger Bolsonaro outside the hospital.
Following the success of the surgery, his medical team acknowledged the importance of treating the recurring hiccups he has suffered from for months.
Bolsonaro’s wife, Michelle, said, “It has been 9 months of infection and daily hiccup anxiety.”
She added in a social media post that her husband’s procedure “blocked” one of his phrenic nerves.
Phrenic nerves cause sudden contraction and expansion, allowing the lungs to breathe in and out. The spasms cause random cervical contractions, often leading to phrenic nerve disruption.
His doctors later confirmed that the right phrenic nerve was treated and that they plan to treat the left phrenic nerve on Monday.
The former president will remain in the hospital before returning to his cell at the Brazilian Federal Police headquarters to continue his sentence.
Bolsonaro was convicted in September for his role in the coup. He was initially placed under house arrest pending appeals but was taken into custody a month ago after being considered a “real flight risk.”
Court officials said he attempted to break his ankle monitor and used his detention outside his home as a cover for his escape. Bolsonaro insisted he had no intention of escaping.
On the same Saturday, the Brazilian Supreme Court ordered the detention of 10 officials on charges of participating in the coup attempt. All of them were former members of his government.
