The death toll in Gaza rises to 12 fatalities due to a severe low-pressure system
The death toll resulting from the low-pressure system and heavy rainfall that struck the Gaza Strip has risen to 12 fatalities, including children, according to local Palestinian sources, citing “Sky News.”
Sources indicated that at least 13 homes collapsed in the past hours, the latest being in the Al-Karama and Sheikh Radwan neighborhoods of Gaza City, and Civil Defense teams are still responding to hundreds of distress calls.
The sources reported that more than 27,000 displaced people’s tents were flooded, swept away by the torrents, or uprooted by severe winds.
Earlier, 5 citizens died and others were injured due to the collapse of a house sheltering displaced people in the Bir an-Naaja area of Beit Lahia in the northern Strip, according to the Palestinian News and Information Agency “WAFA.”
The sources added that two citizens died after a large wall fell on displaced people’s tents in the Al-Rimal neighborhood west of Gaza City early Friday, a child died due to the extreme cold in Gaza City, and an infant died in Al-Shati camp. Another citizen had died yesterday due to a wall collapse in Al-Shati camp.
Two children were also injured after a tent collapsed in “Abu Jabal camp” in the Al-Amadi area, while the extreme cold led to the death of an infant girl inside displaced people’s tents in the Al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis yesterday.
Civil Defense teams pointed out the collapse of at least 10 homes during the past hours, the latest being two homes in the Al-Karama and Sheikh Radwan neighborhoods.
The low-pressure system also led to the flooding of entire camps in the Al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis, and widespread damage to “Al-Bassa and Al-Baraka” areas in Deir al-Balah, and the “Central Market” in Nuseirat, in addition to the “Yarmouk and Port” areas in Gaza City.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) warned yesterday, Thursday, that heavy rains and soaked tents are exacerbating the deteriorating health and living conditions in the overcrowded Strip, stressing that cold weather, poor sanitation, and lack of hygiene raise the risks of disease spread, calling for the urgent facilitation of humanitarian aid entry.
