World Darts Championship: Michael van Gerwen says Peter Wright “should retire”
World darts star Michael van Gerwen says Peter Wright should retire following his early exit from the PDC World Darts Championship.
Wright, a two-time world champion, won fewer than twenty legs and averaged below 80 in his shock defeat to newcomer Arno Merk on Tuesday.
The 36-year-old Van Gerwen stated that “Wright’s current performance is no surprise to him” given his recent inconsistent record, adding that “it is time to hang them up for good.”
Van Gerwen defeated William O’Connor to reach the third round at Alexandra Palace in London.
Wright, who became world champion in 2020 and 2022, has been unable to advance to the semi-finals of any major televised tournament over the past two years.
The 55-year-old winner has not won a European Tour event since 2024 or a Players Championship since 2022.
Wright was not selected for the 2025 Premier League Darts and consequently failed to qualify for the Grand Slam of Darts for the first time since 2012.
Van Gerwen’s comments follow Wright’s recent suggestion that Van Gerwen’s “eyesight is probably going.”
