Google Warns About the Risks of Public Wi-Fi Networks: Essential Tips to Stay Safe

Google has warned smartphone users against relying on public Wi-Fi networks, stressing that this common habit could put their data and privacy at real risk.

In its new advisory document “Beyond the Screen” released in October 2025, the company explained that public Wi-Fi networks are often unencrypted, making them easy targets for hackers who can intercept transmitted data or create fake access points to deceive users.

Google cautioned against entering any sensitive information — such as banking details or passwords — while connected to such networks, emphasizing the importance of regularly monitoring bank accounts and installing the latest system updates and security patches.

The company also highlighted that using a trusted Virtual Private Network (VPN) or switching to mobile data are safer options than relying on open Wi-Fi networks.

Several cybersecurity experts agreed with Google’s warnings. Dr. Mani Neri, a cybersecurity lecturer at Oxford Brookes University, stated, “Many public Wi-Fi networks are unencrypted, making them vulnerable to exploitation by hackers.” He added that some attackers may create fake networks resembling the originals to lure users into connecting.

Oliver Paxton, a security expert at Norton, noted that “data transmitted over many public networks is sent in plain text, making it easy for cybercriminals to intercept.”

Jake Moore, security advisor at ESET, commented that the risk from these networks “is not as high as it once was, but it still exists.”

Dr. Neri explained that the level of risk depends on the device setup and its usage, adding that “avoiding logging into sensitive accounts, such as email or banking, is essential when using a public Wi-Fi network.”

Dr. Apple Yeboah-Ofori, Associate Professor of Cybersecurity at the University of West London, affirmed that “Google is right to issue this warning; public Wi-Fi networks remain one of the key vulnerabilities exploited by cybercriminals.”

Google’s report notes that smartphones and their networks have made our daily lives easier by improving communication and organization, but at the same time, they have opened the door to a “sophisticated global project by criminals” targeting unaware users for substantial financial gain.

According to the document, scams last year alone caused losses exceeding $400 billion globally, while a Google survey revealed that 94% of people received fraudulent text messages requesting personal or financial information.

Golden Rules to Stay Safe on Public Wi-Fi Networks:

  • Disable automatic connection to public or unknown networks to avoid linking to fake networks.

  • Do not download apps or enter personal data on restricted access portals unless absolutely necessary.

  • Check website encryption (HTTPS) before entering any sensitive information and avoid unexpected pop-up windows.

  • Verify the network’s identity before connecting, especially in public places like hotels, airports, and cafés.

  • Use a reputable, paid VPN from well-known developers and avoid free or untrusted networks, which may pose a greater risk than not using a VPN at all.
