Rangers journalist raises questions about the future of the team’s scorers in the league title race
While Youssef Chermiti received widespread praise for his strong achievements with his old team earlier this month, both Youssef Chermiti and Bojan Miovski missed crucial chances last Thursday, leaving persistent questions about their ability to retain the number nine spot for Rangers.
“Rangers are not the finished article yet; there is still work to be done, but they are moving in the right direction,” said McInally. “They have made significant progress, but they must strengthen at the top end [the attack].”
“They are winning games. Have they reached their peak in terms of free-flowing, smooth performance? No, but that doesn’t matter. Regardless, they have managed to put themselves in the league title race.”
At the very least, some reinforcements have arrived. Toto Nwanne has been introduced as a defensive midfielder, and Röhl has also added left-back Tuur Rommens—a position considered a problem given that Jaden Mitchum was the only natural player in that role—and winger Antonis Skvortsov.
The latter is hailed as a major acquisition, arriving on loan from Wolfsburg, and adds much-needed quality to the wings. Djeidi Gassama’s performance has seen a decline, and while Mikey Moore has improved significantly, Oliver Antman remains injured.
After the squad players featured prominently in the victory over Ludogorets, they are expected to appear in different roles for the Dundee match. That game could be decisive in the season’s landscape, coinciding with the Hearts and Celtic clash at Tynecastle on the same day.
“I thought this season would be a write-off,” admitted analyst Steven Thompson at Ibrox. “Changes were made at the managerial level, and the board hadn’t been good enough recently, but Danny Röhl has stabilized things.”
“You have to give him a lot of credit for that. The football was good at times last night, and at other times it was just okay. But they kept a clean sheet in Europe, and that supports the positive feeling.”
If the other title contenders drop points against each other, Rangers could be within three points of the top of the table, based on the early levels achieved under Martí.
“Danny Röhl has done an absolutely amazing job with this group of players,” said former Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday. “The knocking question remains—can they reach that extra level? Many people thought this group of players wouldn’t be able to score.”
“I think they need help, and the biggest help that can be given to them is having a player up front as a proper number nine in football.”
