In response to threats from President Donald Trump, Ali Shamkhani, senior advisor to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, emphasized that Iran’s defense capabilities “cannot be contained or permitted.” Shamkhani added in a post on the “X” platform on Monday that any aggression would be met with “immediate and decisive firmness beyond the imagination of its planners,” marking Tehran’s first official response to Trump’s recent statements.
Shamkhani’s remarks came in response to President Trump’s pledge to prolong his nuclear program, which he made during his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, USA.
In his statements, as reported by media outlets, Trump said, “I hear that Iran is trying to build again. If they are doing that, we will have to strike them. We will strike them and bring them down hard. But we hope that doesn’t happen.”
At the same time, Trump denied Iran’s nuclear capability, considering that the strikes launched by his country last June “completely and totally” destroyed Tehran’s nuclear capabilities at key enrichment sites. This included warnings from Israeli sources regarding Iran’s progress in rebuilding its stockpile of long-range missiles capable of harming Israel.
Trump also opined that Tehran had missed the opportunity to conclude a nuclear deal, saying that Iran “wishes they had made that deal.”
In contrast, Iranian authorities confirmed that they are no longer enriching uranium at any of their sites, expressing readiness to enter into new negotiations regarding their nuclear program.
Media reports expected that Netanyahu’s talks with Trump would include discussing the possibility of taking new military action against Iran, against the backdrop of the military escalation that lasted 12 days between the two countries in recent years.
