Saudi Arabia has announced new steps toward leading the world in the field of Artificial Intelligence by launching the world’s largest government data center, which possesses advanced technologies ensuring its sustainability and operational efficiency.
This project is expected to play the most significant role in achieving Saudi Vision 2030. The new center signals the Kingdom’s commitment to developing the infrastructure necessary to drive the AI revolution.
The “Hexagon” data center, belonging to the Saudi Data and AI Authority (SDAIA), embodies the Kingdom’s sovereignty over the infrastructure that supports AI and high-performance computing. This project is part of the Kingdom’s plans to transform data into a strategic asset.
Launched in Riyadh, the center marks a milestone in the Kingdom’s journey toward pioneering this vital sector. The center has a capacity of up to 480 MW and covers an area exceeding 30 million square feet, making it the fourth-largest data center in the world.
Thanks to its Tier IV classification, the center guarantees operational continuity of up to 99.995% and full fault tolerance. It has also been granted ISO-IEC 22237 certification, which serves as a global reference for infrastructure availability and protection.
The center features advanced technologies in energy efficiency and smart cooling, including direct liquid cooling and hybrid cooling systems, in addition to utilizing the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) coefficient.
The strategic aspect of these modern computing centers will enable the Kingdom to build a solid foundation for diversifying non-oil income sources, enhancing technical sovereignty, and achieving the Crown Prince’s aspirations to make the Kingdom a global hub for advanced technologies.
In this context, data centers are no longer just operational infrastructure; they have transformed into core strategic assets, reflecting a country’s ability to control its data, secure AI models, and ensure the continuity of vital services, especially with the development of generative AI technologies that require superior processing capabilities.
Notably, the center also received a LEED-GOLD rating, making it the largest green data center in the world and encouraging reliance on renewable energy, which supports the Saudi commitment to environmental sustainability.
