Karachi – United News Network – The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has ordered the Kolkata Knight Riders, participating in the Indian MPL league, to terminate the contract of Bangladeshi cricketer Mustafizur Rahman.
League officials did not reveal the reason behind this action, but it comes at a time when relations between India and its neighbor Bangladesh are witnessing notable tension.
Last month, a Hindu man was accused of illicit enrichment and was beaten to death by a mob in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, an incident that prompted Hindu nationalist groups in India to hold demonstrations.
Anti-India sentiment in Bangladesh has been increasing since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to the country in 2024.
India has refused to recognize her prosecution despite repeated requests, and violent demonstrations broke out in Bangladesh following the assassination of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent student leader.
“Based on the developments currently taking place in the region, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has ordered the Kolkata Knight Riders to remove Bangladeshi cricketer Mustafizur Rahman from its squad,” stated the Board’s Secretary, Devajit Saikia.
Saikia added: “They can request a replacement if necessary. We will allow a replacement player upon request.”
