Russian Foreign Minister reveals Washington’s support for separatism in Northeast Syria

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that US support for achieving secession in northeast Syria constitutes a “time bomb.” In an interview with the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), Lavrov said: “The United States maintains an area under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces in the northeast and has been consistently seeking, since the previous administration and by all means, to promote separatism in the regions controlled by these forces. We believe this process is another time bomb.”

Lavrov added that the ideal solution is to begin a comprehensive national dialogue in Syria, especially since this dialogue was suppressed throughout the rule of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

As attacks on Syrian government force positions increased last year, Lavrov said that Russia did not have “combat units” in Syria at that time, but was limited to an air base and a naval base. He noted that the speed with which the opposition led by Ahmed al-Sharaa took control of Syrian territory was unexpected, adding: “There was almost no resistance.”

Lavrov confirmed that Russia is in constant contact with the new authorities in Syria, noting that Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa visited Russia, and that he has met three times with the Republic’s new Foreign Minister.
