Makkah Education Department Concludes Sports Track Initiative for People with Disabilities in Cooperation with Sports Federations
The General Department of Education in the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Region, represented by the Disability Department, concluded today the “Sports Track for People with Disabilities” initiative, in cooperation with the Saudi Boccia Federation, at King Abdulaziz Sports City in Makkah. The event was attended by the Director General of Education, Abdullah Al-Ghannam, along with a number of representatives from supporting and participating entities.
Al-Ghannam explained that the “Sports Track for Students with Disabilities” initiative was approved by the Ministry of Education, noting that it is the first organized, multi-stage sports event in education dedicated to students with disabilities. Al-Ghannam pointed out that the initiative aims to discover and develop the capabilities and talents of students with disabilities by directing them toward the appropriate sport for each category, in cooperation with several sports federations under the Ministry of Sport.
He stated that through this initiative, the Education Department aims to achieve the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 in developing the human capabilities of students with disabilities, honing their athletic skills, integrating them into life, developing their talents, and enhancing their quality of life.
A total of 350 male and female students with disabilities participated in the initiative, with 180 students qualifying for the final rounds. The tournament competitions lasted for two consecutive months.
The initiative targets a number of games and categories, including Boccia for the cerebral palsy and severe physical disabilities category (affiliated with the Saudi Boccia Federation); Bocce for the intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder category (affiliated with the Saudi Special Olympics Federation); and Goalball for the visual impairment category (affiliated with the Saudi Federation for Visual Disabilities).
