Senegal draws with DR Congo 1-1 and leads the group in AFCON

The first half of the match between the Senegalese and Congolese (DR Congo) national teams ended in a goalless draw, despite Senegal’s complete control over the course of play in the first fifteen minutes. At the beginning of the second half, the DR Congo team took control and deservedly took the lead with the first goal, scored by Cedric Bakambu in the 61st minute.

However, Sadio Mane, the Al-Nassr striker and historic captain of the Senegalese “Teranga Lions,” led his team to a draw by scoring the second goal in the 68th minute, ending the match in a 1-1 tie.

With this scenario, Senegal topped Group D in the AFCON tournament with four points, leading on goal difference ahead of the Congolese team, which ranks second with the same tally after losing momentum in extra time.

On the other hand, Benin achieved its first victory in the tournament after defeating Botswana 1-0 in the second match of Group D. Benin moved into third place with three points, while Botswana remained in fourth and last place with zero points.

It is worth noting that the tournament system qualifies the winner and runner-up of each of the six groups to the Round of 16, in addition to the four best third-placed teams across the groups.
