Saudi Arabia is anticipating the arrival of the “white visitor” over the highlands of the Tabuk and Hail regions, with temperatures expected to drop below zero degrees Celsius, according to the spokesperson for the National Center for Meteorology, Hussein Al-Qahtani.
Based on data from the National Center for Meteorology, the center issued a series of alerts and 11 warnings in red and orange, distributed across 11 regions of the Kingdom, due to being affected by a state of atmospheric instability and rainfall of varying intensity, ranging from heavy to light. The conditions are accompanied by active to strong winds, thunderstorms, hail, a likelihood of flash floods, and reduced horizontal visibility.
As part of precautionary measures, the National Center for Meteorology classified specific areas under “red warnings,” cautioning against severe weather phenomena such as very strong winds, near-zero visibility, hail, flash flooding, and thunderstorms. Meanwhile, “orange warnings” covered the Al-Jouf region and parts of the Riyadh, Qassim, Hail, Asir, and Jazan regions, indicating threats that include strong winds, near-zero visibility, hail, flash flooding, thunderstorms, and fog.
In light of the ongoing impacts, the deteriorating weather conditions prompted the suspension of in-person classes today in a number of regions of Saudi Arabia, shifting to remote learning as a precaution to ensure the safety of students and education staff amid the current weather developments. This measure has been repeated for the second consecutive day.
The decision affected the Eastern Province, including schools in Al-Ahsa Governorate, in addition to the Riyadh region and Hafar Al-Batin. The General Directorate of Education in the Qassim region also announced a delay in the start of the school day for the following day, Tuesday, 25-6-1447 AH, until 9:00 a.m. for all schools in the region, based on weather forecast reports received from the National Center for Meteorology and in response to the prevailing climatic conditions.
The National Center for Meteorology also forecast in its daily weather report moderate to heavy thunderstorms that may lead to flash flooding, accompanied by hail showers and active winds, affecting parts of the Jazan and Asir regions, among others.
