Netanyahu refuses President’s participation in the “Board of Peace” launch ceremony in Davos
Davos – The American website “Axios” has learned from two informed sources that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to allow Israeli President Isaac Herzog to attend the launch ceremony of the “Board of Peace,” which was sponsored by U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
The sources clarified that the White House contacted Netanyahu’s office on Tuesday and Wednesday, suggesting that Herzog, who was participating in the Davos forum, represent Israel at the inauguration event of the “Board of Peace” alongside leaders and representatives of other countries, and sign the council’s charter.
The same sources added that Netanyahu rejected the request after several phone calls between senior White House officials and Netanyahu and a number of his aides. Some of these calls were described by the “Axios” sources as “tense and difficult.”
The website noted that Israel was among 21 countries on a list distributed by the White House on Wednesday evening, and efforts to convince Netanyahu continued until a few hours before the start of the ceremony on Thursday.
According to the sources, this refusal led to tensions between Netanyahu’s office and the White House, which ultimately decided to avoid a confrontation with Netanyahu over this issue.
According to “Axios,” Trump’s advisor Jared Kushner and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff preferred to focus pressure on Netanyahu regarding the opening of the Rafah crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip; they arrived in Israel on Saturday evening to discuss the matter with the Israeli leadership.
