Nine people in Suriname, five of them children, were killed by knife strikes on the outskirts of the country’s capital, Paramaribo.

Police in Suriname announced on Friday that nine people, five of them children, died from knife strikes in an attack that took place on the outskirts of the country’s capital, Paramaribo.

A statement by the municipal police reported that two other people, an adult and a child, sustained wounds during the attack that targeted a house in a residential area on a road leading out of the capital on Saturday evening.

The statement mentioned that police forces stormed the scene after receiving a notification and arrested a man after shooting him in the leg; he was transferred to the hospital for treatment and is under police guard.

Local media quoted officials and residents of the area, whose identities were not clarified, stating that the man might be suffering from mental health issues, while Surinamese President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons indicated that the list of attack victims included members of his family and neighbors.

Geerlings-Simons said in a statement: “At a time when families and friends are supposed to be dedicated to supporting each other, we are faced with another harsh reality of a certain kind; there is another side to this world.”

She added: “I wish the survivors much strength, courage, support, and solace during this unimaginably difficult period.”

She continued: “The police have promised to provide more details regarding the circumstances of the incident later.”

Suriname is among the countries with the lowest rates of knife fatalities in the world, making the occurrence of such events relatively rare in the country.

However, the republic, located on the northern coast of South America, has witnessed a series of constitutional emergency coups and a civil war since achieving independence from the Netherlands in 1975.
