Athletic hope in Los Angeles 2028: Successful surgery for Republic of Ireland coach McClenaghan to prepare properly for Olympic participation
The surgery performed by Republic of Ireland athlete, Rhys McClenaghan, this year aims to pave the way for smooth and continuous preparation for two years in readiness for competition in the 2028 Summer Olympic Games to be organized in Los Angeles.
“That thought had crossed my mind when I decided to undergo surgery.”
“Now we have enough time. We prefer not to participate in 2025 rather than continue training with an injury that would hinder me until 2028. Sometimes you have to think about the big picture.”
McClenaghan added: “Regarding my gymnastics skills, I will take things competition by competition; I will work particularly hard and assess how I progress and improve in competitions and performance.”
McClenaghan is participating in qualifying and competing in the 2028 Olympic Games, which is an opportunity for the Olympic warrior to achieve a second gold medal.
Among the athletes hoping to prevent McClenaghan from achieving a second Olympic gold medal will be Great Britain’s athlete, Max Whitlock, a three-time gold medalist, who returned to the sport after withdrawing from gymnastics for a period following the Paris 2024 Olympics.
“I don’t blame him, because I spent time away from gymnastics due to my injury, and I fully realize how much he missed it,” McClenaghan said.
“I don’t blame him for withdrawing and choosing to say, ‘Well, this is such a great sport, I don’t want to stop practicing.’ I congratulate him and look forward to seeing him in the final round, I hope.”
Regardless of the competitors, McClenaghan is committed to achieving the gold medal.
“The ultimate goal, similar to the Paris Olympics where my routine was the most difficult, is to reach the peak of performance at the right time and on the right day.”
“This is definitely the goal for the Los Angeles Olympics, to reassemble my routine and produce the best performance in the world, wishing to obtain a gold medal.”
