One person was killed and another was seriously injured in a horrific accident in the U.S. state of New Jersey, after two helicopters collided in mid-air over the city of Hammonton this Sunday morning, according to video footage showing the moment of the crash.
City Police Chief Kevin Friel said rescue teams responded immediately to a report of a helicopter falling from the sky and found a burning helicopter after it hit the ground. A video circulated by social media users also showed the moment the helicopter spun rapidly before its devastating fall.
Fire destroyed one of the two helicopters after it crashed, and fire crews provided assistance in extinguishing the flames and containing the aftermath of the accident.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) described the incident as a mid-air collision between an Enstrom F-28A and an Enstrom 280C, each carrying only the pilot, while flying over Hammonton Municipal Airport.
Friel confirmed that official investigations will be launched by the FAA alongside the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to determine the causes of the accident and its technical details.
According to weather information, the sky was partially cloudy at the time of the accident, and the “AccuWeather” app reported light winds and good visibility, raising questions about the causes that led to the collision despite the moderate weather conditions.
