Syrian Presidency: President Ahmed al-Sharaa and his American counterpart Donald Trump discussed developments in Syria

The Syrian presidency stated that President Ahmed al-Sharaa and President Trump held a telephone conversation yesterday evening, Monday, focusing on ongoing developments in Syria amidst international questions regarding the future of agreements between Ankara and Washington in the region.

The presidency added in an official statement that the two presidents “stressed the necessity of guaranteeing the rights and protection of the Kurdish people within the framework of the Syrian state,” expressing both countries’ readiness to “continue fruitful cooperation to combat the Islamic State.”

These telephone discussions come at a time when the Syrian government had signed, yesterday, Sunday, a comprehensive merger agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which primarily consists of Syrian Kurdish forces, in an attempt to unify regions and restore internal order.

However, political and military tensions continued to emerge on Monday, raising concerns about the deterioration of the situation on the ground in Syria.
