Health experts in Guernsey have warned island residents against overindulgence during the holiday season, emphasizing the importance of self-care and mental health.
Guernsey’s Director of Public Health, Nicola Brink, noted that the festive season can be overwhelming, leading to feelings of exhaustion, loneliness, and even physical and mental fatigue, in addition to the optimism and joy it naturally brings.
“We must remember that we need to be kind to ourselves and take opportunities for reflection and relaxation as well,” she said.
She added that her tips for improving wellbeing include following a healthy diet, setting aside time to unwind even on the busiest days, and seeking support if necessary.
‘It’s okay to say no’
Brink advised people to “relax and breathe” and set aside a few minutes to unwind.
“Staying connected with others, whether at a community event or contacting a friend by phone, can boost your mood and remind us that we are not alone,” she said.
Ms. Brink also suggested that residents try to find joy in “small things” like the lights in Guernsey, and ensure they set boundaries.
She pointed out that “it’s okay to decline social appointments, traditions, or obligations that leave you feeling tired; just say ‘no, this isn’t for me’.”
Psychologist and Director of Mental Health, Dr. Beverley Tachon, said: “Christmas can be difficult for anyone for many different reasons.”
She added: “If you can, talk to a friend or a family member whom you trust.”
She noted that talking to someone can make people feel “supported, safe, and a sense of belonging.”
Jo Cottell, Chief Executive of Guernsey Mind, said: “Users have control over how they spend the holidays, and it is very important that mental health is moved up the priority list.”
She added that the season can bring challenges including financial anxiety, family conflicts, unrealistic expectations, and feelings of loneliness.
