Putin criticizes Denmark regarding Greenland and speaks about America’s intentions toward it.

2 Min Read

Russian President Vladimir Putin made several remarks regarding Greenland during a Russian Security Council meeting held via video conference, stating that Denmark treated the region “as a colony” in the past. Putin clarified that the situation is “of a different kind” now, referring to the history of Denmark’s relations with Greenland.

Regarding United States intentions toward Greenland, Putin said it is not a Russian affair, stating, “This does not concern us at all.”

Putin linked the subject to Russia’s historical experience, referring to the Alaska deal in the 19th century. He mentioned that Russia sold Alaska to the United States in 1867, considering that this history provides a “frame of reference” to compare the potential value of Greenland.

The Russian President pointed out that Greenland’s area is approximately 2.1 million square kilometers, which is nearly 450,000 square kilometers smaller than Alaska. According to him, the potential price for Greenland would be between $200 million and $250 million, noting that this figure could reach $1 billion if gold prices were added to the calculations.

Putin expressed his confidence that the United States and Denmark would reach a resolution on this issue, saying he “believes they will reach a solution between them.”

These statements come at a time when the United States is working to annex Greenland, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and considered one of its loyal allies. U.S. President Donald Trump has stated many times that the island should become part of the United States.

In this context, Trump announced last week the imposition of a 10% tariff on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland next February, which will later rise to 25%. He stated that these tariffs will remain in effect until an agreement is reached regarding the annexation of Greenland to the United States.

Greenland remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark and has not moved away from this status. Authorities in Denmark and Greenland have warned the United States against any attempt to seize the island, emphasizing their commitment to sovereignty and mutual respect.
