Russia Downs 111 Drones Within Three Hours in Attacks on 6 Regions

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Saturday that air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 111 Ukrainian drones within 3 hours over six Russian regions, including the capital, Moscow, in one of the most extensive aerial attacks over a short period.

In its statement, the ministry explained that on December 27, from 15:00 to 18:00 Moscow time, 73 drones were destroyed over the Bryansk region, 20 over the Kaluga region, 8 drones over the Moscow region, 5 over the Tula region, 3 over the Oryol region, and two drones over the Smolensk region.

The Russian Civil Aviation Authority “Rosaviatsia” reported the imposition of temporary restrictions on the airspace at Moscow’s Vnukovo and Sheremetyevo airports for security reasons related to the aerial attacks.

TASS news agency reported that the number of drones shot down while approaching Moscow since the beginning of Saturday reached 26 drones.

In contrast, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Russia launched missile and drone attacks on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, and other regions of the country this Saturday, prior to his scheduled meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Zelenskyy explained that the overnight attack included approximately 500 drones and 40 missiles, resulting in power and heating outages in parts of the capital. He considered the attack a response to ongoing diplomatic efforts mediated by Washington.

He noted that the upcoming talks in the U.S. state of Florida will focus on the future of the territories controlled by each side after the cessation of fighting in the conflict that has been ongoing since February 2022, which is considered the deadliest in Europe since World War II.
