Unexpected Link Between Changing Sleep Schedules and Arterial Hypertension Revealed by American Researchers
Researchers from the American Scripps Research Institute have revealed an unexpected cause for arterial hypertension in some individuals, represented by the irregularity of sleep timing, rather than its duration.
According to what was published in the journal JMIR, the study relied on data collected from wearable fitness devices and showed that individuals who change their sleep time by just one hour between nights face a higher risk of developing obstructive sleep apnea by more than twofold, and an increased risk of developing hypertension by up to 71%.
The study included approximately 400 adults, whose digital data was collected over two years alongside periodic health surveys, allowing for a long-term analysis of sleep patterns and related behaviors.
The researchers explained that sleep regularity—meaning consistent sleep and wake times—plays a key role in maintaining cardiovascular health, noting that wearable devices can be an effective tool for monitoring health risks early.
Despite the striking results, those in charge of the study emphasized that the relationship between sleep disturbance and high blood pressure still requires further research to accurately determine the mechanism of impact and to definitively verify the cause-and-effect relationship.
