Dubai, UAE – October 25, 2023 – Pioneering scientific research has revealed a direct link between lack of sleep and brain aging, with scientists finding that the brains of individuals suffering from poor sleep may be older than their actual chronological age.
Scientists explain that sleep plays a vital role in body regeneration and brain protection. Therefore, any disruption in sleep hours can have consequences for the brain, causing brain aging, cognitive decline, and an increased risk of dementia.
According to a report by the British newspaper “The Independent,” viewed by “Al Arabiya Net,” experts noted that it remains unclear whether unhealthy sleep habits contribute to the development of dementia or are simply an early symptom of a neurodegenerative condition.
In the new study, researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden examined sleep behavior and MRI scans of more than 27,000 British adults between the ages of 40 and 70. they found that individuals suffering from poor sleep had brains that appeared significantly older than their true ages.
The brain imaging study utilized machine learning technology on brain images of healthy individuals without serious diseases. Once the model understood the features of natural aging, it was applied to the data.
The participants’ sleep quality was evaluated based on five self-reported factors: chronotype (morning/evening activity), sleep duration, insomnia, snoring, and daytime sleepiness. They were then divided into three groups based on their scores: healthy sleep (more than 4 points), intermediate sleep (2-3 points), or poor sleep (less than 1 point).
