Swiss police identify four victims of the fire at a mountain resort restaurant

Swiss police forces have identified four of the victims of a fire that occurred at a restaurant in a Swiss mountain resort on New Year’s Eve. The bodies of two Swiss girls, aged 21 and 16, and two Swiss men, aged 18 and 16, have been handed over to their families, according to a police statement.

The regional police of the Canton of Valais confirmed that the identifications were made possible through intensive work by authorities and the National Institute of Forensic Medicine, noting that work continues to identify the remaining victims of the incident.

It is noted that the fire at the “Les Constellations” restaurant in Crans-Montana claimed the lives of 40 people and injured 119 others, according to preliminary figures issued by local authorities, amid deepening grief and devastation felt by residents and locals in the area.

The preliminary investigation into the disaster attributed the potential cause of the fire to small fireworks placed on liquor bottles at “Les Constellations” being ignited too close to the ceiling, which led to the fire spreading very rapidly.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin expressed the deep pain and shock gripping the entire Swiss people following this national catastrophe, considering it one of the worst tragedies in the country’s modern history.

Swiss authorities emphasized that any additional information regarding the identified victims will not be disclosed without prior notice, given the prevailing atmosphere and the need to ensure the privacy of the families who lost loved ones in the incident.

The death of a teenage Italian golfer had been reported earlier, but Swiss and Italian authorities have not yet officially confirmed this information, as identification and reporting processes continue at a slow pace.

A hotline was established yesterday evening to report any information related to the victims and those deceased in the fire: +41 848 112 117.
