Syrian Ambassador Announces Attempts to Destabilize His Country: Protests and Operations on the Coast
Syrian Ambassador and diplomat Bassam Barabandi stated that there are ongoing attempts to destabilize Syria, noting that the Syrian government has permitted demonstrations as a guaranteed right in what is called the “New Syria.”
Barabandi emphasized that what is happening represents a distraction for the state amidst the presence of declared foreign agendas targeting stability, according to “Al Arabiya.”
The Syrian coast witnessed demonstrations interspersed with shooting incidents by masked individuals, resulting in the death of one security member and three protesters. Following the escalation of events, the Syrian Ministry of Defense announced the entry of army units into the cities of Latakia and Tartus. The Ministry’s Media and Communication Department confirmed that groups supported by armored vehicles and tanks deployed inside the city centers after increased targeting by outlaw groups, stressing that the army’s mission is limited to maintaining security and restoring stability in cooperation with the internal security forces.
These developments come after demonstrations involving thousands of members of the Alawite community on the coast, following a mosque bombing in Homs that killed eight people.
A security source reported the killing of a security member by the bullets of masked individuals described as being from “remnants of the former regime.”
In this context, Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal, head of the Supreme Alawite Islamic Council, called for peaceful sit-ins, demanding peaceful mass mobilization.
It is worth noting that the coast witnessed bloody waves of violence last March, which, according to a national investigative committee, left at least 1,426 Alawites dead, in addition to dozens of security members.
