The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) warns against entering Iranian airspace.

2 Min Read

Agence France-Presse (AFP) has warned of a significant risk to civil aviation in Iranian airspace, pointing to the presence of a vast array of weapons and air defense systems and the potential for their use, as well as unpredictable reactions from the Iranian government.

In a statement citing multiple sources, the agency said, “All of this poses a massive danger to civil flights operating at all altitudes and flight levels,” according to reports by international media.

The agency also warned of an increased possibility of civil aircraft being mistakenly targeted in Iranian airspace, especially given ongoing regional tensions and the potential for military action by the United States, which has placed Iranian air defense forces on high alert.

Recent data from flight tracking websites indicates that major European airlines, including Wizz Air, Lufthansa, and British Airways, have avoided flying over Iranian and Iraqi airspace in recent days, despite the reopening of the airspace to civil aviation.

It is noteworthy that Reuters previously cited local sources and human rights organizations in Iran reporting a slight decrease in the scale of ongoing protests in the country over recent days.

According to the same sources, the protests began in late December as a direct response to deteriorating economic conditions and rising inflation, before later evolving into one of the largest waves of social unrest to hit Iran in recent years.
