The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it is closely following the incident of an illegal migration boat sinking, which was carrying 34 irregular migrants of various nationalities, including 14 Egyptian citizens, who lost their lives while heading from a neighboring country to Greece on December 7.
In an official statement, the ministry urged the Egyptian Embassy in Athens to immediately communicate at the highest level with the Greek authorities to make every possible effort for those rescued from the boat. It also requested the swift repatriation of the bodies of the deceased after the completion of the necessary legal procedures, adding that it has contacted the families of the victims to arrange the transfer of the bodies back to the homeland.
The ministry reiterated its appeals to citizens not to be drawn into illegal migration networks in order to protect their lives, stressing the importance of following legal procedures for entering foreign countries through lawful visas to avoid the recurrence of such tragic incidents.
