Highlights of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Auction: New International Faces Emerge and Cameron Green Vows to Play as an All-Rounder
The 26-year-old Australian player, Cameron Green, secured a spot in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after being sold under the capped batters category. In previous seasons, Green scored 707 runs with a strike rate exceeding 150 and took 16 wickets in 29 matches with the Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Despite being sold as a capped batter, Green announced that he would be available to play as an all-rounder, characterizing his classification status as an “administrative error” made by his management team. Green has suffered from back problems throughout his career, and a recent surgery forced him to miss the 2025 IPL. It was noted that he returned to competition as a specialist batter in June, but the Australians are currently using him as an all-rounder in the ongoing Ashes series against England.
English opening batter Ben Duckett will make his IPL debut after being purchased by the Delhi Capitals for 2 crore (approximately £167,000). He was the only England player selected in the first stage of the auction, though four others were picked up during the accelerated rounds.
Sunrisers Hyderabad purchased all-rounder Liam Livingstone for 13 crore (approximately £1.085 million), making him the fifth-highest price in the auction and marking his fourth team in the league.
Batter Tom Banton and left-arm pacer Luke Wood will join Jos Buttler at the Gujarat Titans, while the title winners Royal Challengers Bengaluru purchased Jordan Cox for the first time, where he will play alongside Phil Salt and Jacob Bethell.
As for Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana, he secured the second-highest contract of the day, signing with the Kolkata Knight Riders for 18 crore (£1.5 million).
Uncapped Indian players, wicketkeeper-batter Kartik Sharma and all-rounder Prashant Veer, signed with the Chennai Super Kings for 14.2 crore (£1.185 million), representing the highest deals of the following day.
Among the prominent players who went unsold in the auction were Australia’s Steve Smith, and England’s Jamie Smith and Jonny Bairstow, as well as New Zealand’s Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell.
