US President Trump confirms his full commitment to purchasing Greenland
In recent remarks, President Donald Trump threatened the United States and other countries regarding Greenland’s weak defenses, pointing out that the island uses “two dog sleds” as a means of defense, while Russian and Chinese destroyers and submarines are everywhere.
Trump confirmed in his circulated speech that he would do something about Greenland, asserting his challenge that it would be done “whether they like it or not,” explaining that he prefers to make the deal the easy way, and if the easy way does not work, it will be done the hard way.
Trump stressed that the United States needs to own Greenland to ensure national security, emphasizing that leasing the island would not be enough and would not satisfy his demands.
In a related context, the Financial Times, citing a poll conducted by the Verian company, indicated that 85% of Greenland’s population does not wish to obtain US citizenship, believing that the standard of living in Denmark is much higher, and pointing to concerns about crime and high healthcare costs in the United States.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen warned the United States, in a joint statement, against seizing the island, emphasizing the need to respect their common territorial integrity.
Specifically, Greenland was a Danish colony until 1953 and remains part of the Kingdom to this day, but it was granted self-rule in 2009, allowing it to manage its affairs and determine its internal policy.
