Trump: Detaining a Venezuelan oil tanker off its coast raises regional tensions

2 Min Read

In the latest attempt by the Trump administration to increase pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who faces terrorism-related drug trafficking charges in the United States, President Donald Trump announced that U.S. forces had seized a massive oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela.

Trump told reporters at the White House, “We have just detained an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela. It’s a huge tanker—actually the largest ever seized.”

According to Bloomberg, citing informed sources, U.S. forces intercepted and took control of a sanctioned oil tanker off Venezuelan waters.

Oil experts noted that most Venezuelan oil is exported to China, often through intermediaries and at significant discounts due to sanctions-related risks. They warned that the seizure could further complicate Venezuela’s ability to export oil, as shipping companies may hesitate to transport future shipments.

The Maduro government considers the U.S. move an attempt to control Venezuela’s vast oil reserves.

In recent months, Maduro has called on citizens to unite against U.S. threats and join popular militias, announcing the deployment of forces, ships, aircraft, and drones along the border with Colombia and some coastal areas.
