Two young security officers and another killed in Moscow explosion, Russia

Three people, including two young security officers, were killed in an explosion in the center of the Russian capital, Moscow, according to Russian authorities.

The Russian Investigative Committee stated that the two officers, both traffic police, had spotted a hesitant young man next to a police car on Yayskaya Street in Moscow. As soon as the two young men moved to arrest the suspect, he detonated an explosive device.

The two security officers died, along with another individual who was near the site of the explosion, due to the injuries they sustained.

The explosion occurred near the site of a previous incident on Monday, where Afnan Sarvarov, a prominent Russian Major General, was killed in a car explosion. Afnan Sarvarov, 56, was the head of the Armed Forces Operational Training Department.

Svetlana Petrenko, spokesperson for the Investigative Committee, confirmed in a statement on Telegram that a criminal investigation has been launched regarding an “attempt on the lives of two police officers.”

Russian media reported that the names of the two security officers are Ilya Klimanov, 24, and Maxim Gorbanov, 25.

Alexander, a resident living nearby, told Reuters: “An explosion occurred. It was a massive sound—similar to the car explosion a few days ago.”

Russia has stated it believes Ukraine is behind Monday’s explosion, but Ukraine has not disclosed its role, if any, in the death of Afnan Sarvarov. Currently, authorities are still investigating whether the first and second explosions are linked.

This marks the third car bomb attack targeting a military official in the Russian capital within the past year.
