Syrian Army forces move to Al-Aqtan Prison in Raqqa and initiate control

Raqqa, Syria (Makkah Time) – January 23, 2026: The “Syrian Army Operations Command” reported that Syrian Military Police units have begun taking over the perimeter of Al-Aqtan Prison in Raqqa province, in accordance with an agreement reached on January 18.

The Command stated, in a comment to Al Jazeera, that the Syrian Army has commenced the transfer of some personnel from the “Syrian Defense Forces” (SDF) from within the prison and its surroundings to the Ain al-Arab (Kobani) region. This move aligns with the terms agreed upon by the parties.

Al Jazeera’s correspondent on the ground reported that Syrian Military Police forces have entered Al-Aqtan Prison. No further details have been provided regarding the technical mechanism for implementing the agreement or the extent to which the transfer and control process has been completed.
