2 Min Read

A journalist surprised the Algerian star Riyad Mahrez during a press conference by asking a question about his feelings regarding representing Algeria, his father’s country, on the soil of Morocco, his mother’s country.

Mahrez described the question as “clever” and responded with clarity and confidence, emphasizing that the most important thing was the warm reception the Algerian delegation received in Morocco, considering the latter a “sister country.”

The former Manchester City star, who has both Algerian and Moroccan family roots, said: “We are happy to be in a sister country like Morocco, and we have experienced a warm welcome from our Moroccan brothers.”

Mahrez stressed that his family roots do not affect his footballing and national commitment to Algeria, noting that: “My father is Algerian and my mother is Moroccan, but that changes nothing about my commitment to the Algerian national team. We are here to give everything we have, and we will do our best to represent our country in the best possible way.”

He added that participating in a major tournament held in a neighboring country provides additional motivation for the Algerian team “to deliver a distinguished performance and achieve positive results.”

A question described by Riyad Mahrez as clever during the Africa Cup of Nations when a journalist asked him:

❓ How do you feel representing your father’s country while playing on the land of your mother’s country?

🗣️ Riyad Mahrez: Yes, I am from an Algerian father 🇩🇿 and a Moroccan mother 🇲🇦, but the most important thing is that the Moroccans hosted us wonderfully and they are a sister country 🫱🏽‍🫲🏼!
