U.S. Department of State Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt indicated during a press briefing that Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the administration have reached out to Ms. Rodríguez and members of the interim Venezuelan government, who have shown great willingness to cooperate regarding the current situation in Venezuela.
Leavitt noted, “So far, they are fulfilling all of President Trump’s demands,” adding that “the President has expressed his satisfaction regarding Venezuela and looks forward to continued cooperation.”
This comes following an operation by U.S. special forces, in which Venezuelan President Maduro and his deputy Flores were arrested in Caracas on January 3 and transported to New York, where they are scheduled to stand trial on drug trafficking charges.
Following this operation, Rodríguez was sworn in as the interim president of the state, having previously served as Vice President under Maduro’s rule.
Rodríguez strongly condemned the U.S. operation, continuing to refer to Maduro as the legitimate president of Venezuela, while also offering to hold talks on potential cooperation with the United States.
Furthermore, Rodríguez has released a number of political prisoners in recent days and intends to continue this approach in handling the country’s ongoing situation.
