Widespread controversy over the closure of Israel Army Radio and the disruption of freedom of expression

2 Min Read

Legal and political reports revealed new developments today regarding the dispute over the fate of Israel Army Radio (Galei Zahal), which has been broadcasting for 75 years, as the government prepares to discuss its closure in a scheduled meeting. A high-ranking source confirmed that the decision lacks a sufficient factual or professional basis and raises concerns that it may be tainted by improper considerations, adding that pushing it forward could conflict with the law.

The source indicated that his position was accompanied by an advisory opinion, ahead of a government meeting scheduled for Monday, during which Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz is expected to propose the station’s closure.

In the same context, Israeli Opposition Leader Yair Lapid stated that the proposal to close Army Radio is part of the government’s efforts to abolish freedom of expression in Israel, especially in an election year. He added that the government is unable to control reality and is therefore trying to control consciousness, noting that it began with the Israel Broadcasting Corporation, followed by Army Radio, and these steps could later extend to Channels 12 and 13.

Lapid emphasized that the government will not stop there, considering that it seeks to hide any truth it dislikes. He stated that the government is incapable of facing the high cost of living, suffers from security neglect, and turns a blind eye to ultra-Orthodox draft evasion, and thus turns to closing media outlets instead of addressing crises.

If the proposal is approved, Army Radio, which has been broadcasting for 75 years, will cease operations no later than March 1.
