WHO Reports Rising Influenza Activity and New A(H3N2) Strain Reaching 30 Countries

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced an increase in global activity levels of seasonal influenza and several other respiratory viruses as winter approaches in various regions.

For the first time, the organization has detected a new sub-strain of the A(H3N2) virus, known as the “K Strain,” in more than 30 countries worldwide. The WHO confirmed that currently available vaccines remain effective in protecting against severe disease symptoms. It urged member states to strengthen health surveillance efforts, expand vaccination campaigns, and prepare for any emerging medical developments.

The organization noted that some countries have reported an early start to the flu season since last October, which has rapidly evolved into epidemic levels. The WHO explained that influenza viruses can change very quickly, requiring continuous updates to vaccine compositions to ensure their ongoing effectiveness.
