It is God’s decree and the appointed end He has written for every human being. The true tragedy lies in the extinguishing of a lamp that gave others light and warmth, and in the absence of a soul that was a haven of reassurance and serenity wherever it went.

From the moment I first set foot on the ancient pavements of Cambridge, the name Mohammed Al-Qasim seemed to reach hearts before tongues. It echoed through the city as though he were still walking its streets, step by step. I never sat with him, nor did my hand ever meet his; yet whenever someone who knew him spoke of him, I felt as though I were recalling the features of an old friend with whom I had shared a lifetime.

The stories varied, yet their impact only grew deeper. Everyone who had met Mohammed carried a chapter from the book of his character. The thread that bound all those chapters together, however, was one and the same: a rare and extraordinary humanity, and a nobility seldom found in an age where chivalry and decency have become scarce.

Mohammed was not merely an expatriate who packed a few books and certificates into his suitcase. He carried within him a heart spacious enough for every weary soul. He saw the worries in strangers’ eyes as though they were his own responsibility, as if God had planted within him the noble understanding that goodness is never complete until it is shared with others.

His companions abroad recount that whenever students found themselves struggling to secure accommodation, he would quietly step in without causing them the slightest embarrassment. With simple sincerity, he would say, “There is a room available and fully furnished; you can stay there for five days or a week,” whatever their circumstances required.

What was remarkable, however, was that he never told them it was his own room.

It was his only room—his sole refuge.

He would willingly give up his bed and comfort with a contented smile so that a tired stranger could rest, while he himself slept on the floor of a friend’s room for days without complaint. He did not do this for recognition or praise. He simply believed, with the effortless conviction of the pure-hearted, that it was the right thing to do. Such was Mohammed.

On the other side of the story stood two parents gazing toward the horizon with hopeful eyes. They carried the weight of years through prayer and sacrifice, waiting for their son to return crowned with knowledge and achievement, ready to begin a new chapter of joy with them. Countless dreams were woven behind the curtain of time, only to be buried before they ever saw the light.

Then came a tragedy too painful for the mind to imagine.

Last August, in a senseless scene that defies moral comprehension, a treacherous hand struck. A man whose mind had been clouded by alcohol delivered a fatal stab that took Mohammed’s noble soul in an instant—without cause, without provocation, without any justification for such violence.

Mohammed dismounted from the saddle of life, leaving behind broken hearts and an entire city. Yet the city did not dwell on the details of the horrific crime; instead, it spoke with reverence of his virtues and character. Perhaps therein lies the deeper meaning of existence: people do not remember a person by the way they died, but by the way they lived.

For this reason, I never heard anyone speak of Mohammed merely as a victim. They spoke of him as a noble human being. They remembered his generosity, his warm smile, and his ever-open hands extended in kindness. So powerful was the presence of this absent man that he found his way even into my own heart, leaving an impression that time itself cannot erase.

When I recently witnessed earthly justice deliver its verdict, sentencing the killer to life imprisonment, I felt that the law had done all it could to avenge his blood. Yet every heart knew that the loss was greater than any sentence. No judge’s gavel can return a son to his mother’s embrace, nor can any ruling dry the tears that fall from a grieving father’s eyes.

Despite every sorrow, faith in God remains the greatest solace—the unwavering certainty that there is a divine scale that never tilts unjustly, a heavenly justice that never sleeps, and a mercy vast enough to embrace the pains of this world and heal its wounds.

Mohammed Al-Qasim left this world far too soon, yet in his few years he achieved what many fail to accomplish in a lifetime. He earned sincere love and left behind a legacy of fragrant praise. It is enough for his name to be mentioned for faces to soften with a sorrowful smile, for hearts to grow tender, and for hands to rise toward the heavens praying for mercy upon him.

Peace be upon that generous soul who passed among us like a gentle breeze and departed, leaving behind a profound lesson in the meaning of kindness and noble character. O Allah, grant him the ranks of the truthful and the martyrs, and bind the hearts of his parents and family with patience, comfort, and peace.

For some people leave this world…

Yet they pitch their tents in the deepest chambers of our hearts, and never truly depart.

Dr. Faisal Al-Mutairi
President of the International Diplomatic Union
Ambassador of the International Congress
Cambridge

Mohammed Al-Qasim.. the soul that outpaced both body and age Death, in itself, is not the tragedy.
