Sources close to “Al Arabiya and Al Hadath” revealed that the United States is preparing to launch a new field mechanism to accompany the implementation of security understandings between Lebanon and Israel, in a step aimed at addressing the gaps that accompanied previous stages of the Lebanese Army’s deployment in the south of the country, enhancing the effectiveness of field verification procedures, as part of US efforts to strengthen regional stability and prevent any new escalation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the sources, the reviews conducted by US authorities showed that previous Lebanese Army deployment operations relied heavily on information and coordinates provided by international committees and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), in addition to locations that had been coordinated with the Israeli side through approved communication channels. Furthermore, subsequent verification operations revealed the existence of sites and infrastructure that had not been detected during earlier stages, prompting Washington to reassess implementation and monitoring mechanisms.<\/p>\n

In light of these assessments, the US administration intends to send a specialized team to Lebanon whose mission will be to provide logistical, technical, and engineering support for Lebanese Army deployment operations, without undertaking any direct combat or security missions on the ground.<\/p>\n

US Technical Team and New Verification Mechanisms<\/strong><\/p>\n

The sources explained that the US team will include experts in military engineering, geographic surveying, and detection and reconnaissance technologies. It will work in coordination with relevant authorities to ensure that the areas where the Lebanese Army will be deployed are free of any military infrastructure, shelters, or equipment belonging to Hezbollah, benefiting from advanced US technical capabilities, within the framework of the verification mechanisms stipulated in the understandings currently being implemented.<\/p>\n

The sources confirmed that the role of this team will remain limited to advisory and technical aspects and that it will not constitute a combat force or participate in field security operations. They also noted that any targeting of its members would be viewed in Washington as a direct attack on an American mission, which could lead to firm US responses.<\/p>\n

On the ground, the sources indicated that the proposed plan is based on a gradual Israeli withdrawal beginning from two trial areas, followed, if verification operations and Lebanese Army deployment succeed, by withdrawals from other areas at a faster pace, particularly in areas located north of the Yellow Line, allowing the effectiveness of the new mechanism to be tested before expanding its implementation.<\/p>\n

International Support and US Monitoring of Regional Developments<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the sources, the US administration believes that the success of this phase could provide Lebanese President “Joseph Aoun” with domestic political momentum by achieving tangible progress in extending state authority over border areas, which would strengthen the presence of legitimate Lebanese institutions and consolidate the army’s role in maintaining security and stability.<\/p>\n

The sources also revealed that Washington is simultaneously working to establish a direct military coordination mechanism between the US Central Command (CENTCOM) and both the Lebanese and Israeli commands, whereby American generals would manage communication channels between the two sides, oversee the handling of any field incidents that may arise, and follow up on the implementation of security arrangements to ensure rapid response and reduce the likelihood of escalation.<\/p>\n

Alongside the field moves, the US administration continues its efforts to gather international support for the new path through communications with a number of European countries, particularly Italy and France, as well as several Arab countries, with the aim of providing political, financial, and logistical backing to support the implementation of the understandings and strengthen the capabilities of the Lebanese Army during the deployment phase.<\/p>\n

Despite these developments, the sources emphasized that Washington continues to view the understandings related to Lebanon as part of a broader regional landscape linked to developments in regional files, most notably the outcomes of ongoing talks with Iran. Therefore, the US administration continues to closely monitor the course of events before moving toward more comprehensive steps or establishing permanent arrangements, pending a clearer picture of the regional situation.<\/p>\n
