New U.S. sanctions and Tehran vows to respond<\/h2>\n

Iran has vowed to respond to a new package of U.S. economic sanctions announced by Washington, aimed at tightening the pressure on the Iranian economy and cutting off its financing channels. Tehran, meanwhile, affirmed its confidence in the ability of its main trading partners to withstand the U.S. pressure campaign and refuse to comply with it.<\/p>\n

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the new measures on Monday, but stopped short of imposing the harshest possible sanctions, warning instead that countries continuing to trade with Iran could face the risk of being excluded from the dollar-based financial system. He also declined to identify the countries that could be targeted by future measures or specify when they would take effect, saying Washington would give those countries time to comply with the new directives.<\/p>\n

The Treasury Department announced sanctions against 60 individuals, entities, and vessels. The measures did not include any Chinese financial institution suspected of facilitating Iranian oil trade, despite China remaining one of the largest buyers of Iranian crude.<\/p>\n

Before the U.S. announcement, Tehran had threatened to respond to any new economic measures with military action, in addition to further reducing oil exports from the Gulf region.<\/p>\n

Iranian Economy Minister Ali Madani Zadeh said after the announcement that his country was fully prepared to confront the sanctions, stressing that Tehran does not view U.S. pressure solely through a defensive lens and possesses tools that can be used in response. He also noted that China and Russia had rejected the U.S. measures, predicting that other countries could join the opposition to the sanctions.<\/p>\n

In the same context, Press TV quoted Brigadier General Hossein Mohabi, a spokesperson for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, as pledging to target vital U.S. interests and energy routes if Iranian infrastructure comes under threat.<\/p>\n

Pakistani mediation and a stalled diplomatic track<\/h3>\n

These developments come as diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran remain deadlocked. Iran and the United States had signed an interim agreement in June, known as the “Islamabad Memorandum,” but the process quickly stalled.<\/p>\n

The Pakistani military announced on Tuesday that Islamabad, which is acting as a mediator between the two sides, had made “significant progress” during its latest talks with Tehran. The discussions focused on measures aimed at preventing further escalation and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who accompanied Army Chief Asim Munir to Tehran, said the Iranian president had presented his government’s position openly and that the talks addressed the relevant issues constructively.<\/p>\n

Despite the absence of major attacks between the two sides for several weeks, prospects for reaching a diplomatic settlement to end the war remain limited. Washington is meanwhile exploring new ways to halt Iranian attacks on ships in the Gulf, as well as attacks recently carried out by Tehran’s allies in the Red Sea.<\/p>\n

Around six months have passed since U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran began, resulting in thousands of deaths\u2014most of them in Iran and Lebanon\u2014and causing severe damage to Iran’s military and economic capabilities.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, Tehran still retains missile and drone capabilities that enable it to threaten Gulf states and oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, while the status of its nuclear program remains unclear.<\/p>\n

China at the center of the economic confrontation<\/h3>\n

As Washington continues to intensify pressure on Iran, oil trade with China has emerged as one of the most sensitive issues. Bessent justified the decision not to immediately sanction certain parties and his refusal to disclose the targeted countries by citing a desire to avoid harming the global financial system and to give companies and governments sufficient time to sever their ties with Iran.<\/p>\n

China has remained the largest buyer of Iranian oil for years. However, the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports, reimposed in mid-July, has effectively reduced flows of Iranian crude to China.<\/p>\n

Experts believe Washington is dealing very cautiously with the possibility of targeting Chinese banks, particularly as preparations continue for expected talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, alongside the sensitivity of critical minerals in relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n

In this context, Bessent said U.S. sanctions exempt no one, while China’s Foreign Ministry stressed that sanctions and pressure tactics do not help resolve problems, adding that Beijing would take the necessary measures to protect its interests.<\/p>\n
